Building Your Personal AI Art Director
Creating cohesive, high-quality visuals when you need ‘em
Tools:
ChatGPT
Midjourney
Step 1: Find a reference image
Find a reference image you can use as the base for your generations. I used this one:
Step 2: Use ChatGPT for meta-prompting
This is the key for the whole workflow. You don’t prompt Midjourney directly, instead you go via ChatGPT and have it generate a prompt for Midjourney for you.
Drop the image into Midjourney together with this prompt:
“describe this image in the form of a midjourney prompt to generate a similar result“
Step 3: Generate your first reference image
Take the prompt from the previous step and drop it into Midjourney. This was my prompt:
“futuristic hypercar rendered in glowing neon wireframe, sleek aerodynamic design, vibrant blue and orange lighting, glowing edges, dark reflective floor, digital waves in the background, cinematic lighting, ultra high detail, 8K, cyberpunk aesthetic, isometric perspective, photorealistic rendering.”
These were my generations:
At this point, if you didn’t get quite what you wanted, go back and forth between ChatGPT and Midjourney a few times. Describe what you want differently to ChatGPT and do a new generation. Move on to the next step when you’re happy.
Step 4: Expand your reference set
Go back to ChatGPT and create a new scene, For instance:
“create a prompt for a similar style image of a cowboy riding a horse”
Take the prompt that ChatGPT generates and drop it into Midjourney.
This time, also select one of the visuals from the previous step as a style reference:
Now you’ve got another collection of images in the same, cohesive style. Not all generations will be optimal, simply ignore the ones you don’t like.
Step 5: Expand some more
For optimal results, repeat the previous step a few more times. Each time using ChatGPT as an aid to describe a new scene, and using a previous generation as a style reference.
Step 6: Setup reusable profile
Select “Personalize” in the left side menu in Midjourney:
Scroll down and click the “Create Moodboard” button:
Give your board a name and then choose the “Add from Gallery” option:
Now select all the generations from the previous steps that you want to base the profile on (this is where you ignore any generations you’re not happy with).
Step 7: Generate new visuals on demand
Whenever you need a new visual in the same style, go to ChatGPT (reuse the same chat which now contains a bunch of style context).
Copy the prompt to Midjourney and generate it using the moodboard profile.
To activate the profile you click the P (for personalize) on the right hand side of the prompt input. In the dropdown, select your moodboard:
With minimal effort you can generate all kinds of images retaining the style:
Bonus: Expand the moodboard
As you use this style to generate more visuals, go back to your moodboard and add the best generations to it. This tightens up the style profile and enhances it over time.
